Mixing Vintage Pieces with Contemporary Style

When redesigning a space, it’s easy to fall into the idea that you have to choose between old and new or that everything has to be from the same era. But what if there was a way to blend the best of both worlds? Mixing vintage or antique pieces with a modern sensibility can create a space that feels both timeless and fresh—honoring the past while embracing the present. It’s about finding a balance that makes the history of the piece relevant today, not by replicating it, but by giving it new life.

The Power of Updating Vintage Pieces

A recent project with a client in Orange County perfectly demonstrates how to make vintage pieces work for today’s living spaces. The client wanted a cozy, classic aesthetic with a slight push beyond their comfort zone. They were open to exploring new design territory but still wanted to feel grounded in something familiar.

One of the standout pieces of the design was the wife’s grandmother’s chairs and ottoman. These heirloom pieces had great bones but needed a modern update to make them feel fresh and aligned with the rest of the space. Rather than completely replacing them with something new, we opted to reupholster the chairs with a more modern fabric. We also refreshed the cushions with new inserts for added comfort. The result was a beautiful fusion of the past and present: the chairs retained their sentimental value but now carried a more current vibe, perfect for a cozy, welcoming living room.

In my own home, I have a mix of family heirlooms, like two antique trunks that my great-grandparents brought with them to the US, and my grandmother's mid-century slipper chairs, which I’ve reupholstered several times in the last 25 years. These pieces carry so much personal history, and by reimagining them in new ways, they continue to play an important role in my home. The key is not to let them feel static, but to evolve with time, much like the spaces we create.

Tips for Mixing Vintage with Modern Design

  1. Update Upholstery and Cushions: Updating the fabric and cushion inserts can breathe new life into older furniture. Choose materials or colors that feel current and complement your modern pieces, but don’t be afraid to incorporate patterns or textures that nod to the past.

  2. Pair Classic Pieces with Minimalist Accents: Vintage pieces often have intricate details and rich textures, which can be beautifully balanced with more minimalist, modern furniture. A vintage armchair next to a sleek, contemporary sofa creates an unexpected but harmonious contrast.

  3. Embrace the History: Don’t shy away from the imperfections that make vintage pieces unique. Scratches, patinas, and wear marks can tell a story. When paired with modern, clean-lined furniture, these pieces often become the focal points that draw the eye.

Final Thoughts

The beauty of mixing vintage and modern elements lies in the endless possibilities. By updating and reinterpreting older pieces, you can create a space that is both full of character and tailored to your modern lifestyle. You don’t have to throw away the things that hold meaning for you—sometimes, a little update is all it takes to make them shine in a new way.

When done thoughtfully, a mix of vintage and modern styles can create a space that feels personal, timeless, and uniquely yours.
