“Sometimes all it takes is a tiny shift of perspective to see something familiar in a totally new light.” Dan Brown, The Lost Symbol

January 1, 2014

I've been doing some major renovations... on my mental state.  Dan Brown's, The DaVinci Code, was an initial catalyst because it made me question the religious dogma I grew up with.  I've been working at shifting all my other beliefs ever since.   Like all renovations, this one hasn't been pretty plus it's gone over schedule and over budget.  Like the work on our homes, our spiritual journey is never ending.

I still remember 9 years ago, one of my brothers mentors telling me "anyone, given the proper training, can complete a marathon".  I thought he was crazy, but once I made the mental shift from "I can't" to "I'm healthy, there is no excuse" I was able to complete a marathon.

Instead of making endless New Years Resolutions that you (probably) won't keep, how about making it your goal to shift your perspective instead.  I am about to embark on a trip to Bali, where I will be immersed in the culture and get to see design/art/architecture that isn't western-centric.  I look forward to seeing what shifts happen and what memorabilia I bring back to display in my home.

African drum turned end table

What memento's do you have on display in your home?  Do they bring back happy memories for you?  Are they in a location that visitors can see them, to spark conversation?  My parents house still has pieces that my dad brought back from Africa, where he visited when he was in college (I have a drum that was converted into an end table).   Do you need help in better showcasing the pieces you've collected?  Contact me through my website http://www.the-silver-lining.com or by emailing me directly at info@the-silver-lining.com

Remember to always look for the silver lining.
