You were born an original, don't die a copy...

Anyone remember the Friends episode with the coffee table from Pottery Barn that Rachel tries to pass off as vintage? Don't get me wrong, I love retail (West Elm is a favorite), but I love when people combine that mass produced item with pieces that have a history and a story - it makes your space an original. I've been seeing so much this month that hammers this home:

  • A report about items for the home being made abroad vs here in the U.S. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OttqMTDIUFw&list=PL3E897541BD17C695) - I'm not saying don't ever buy imported stuff, but if you could get this super cool lamp (http://www.etsy.com/listing/124324390/industrial-lighting-upcycled-glass-dome?ref=related-0) from an artisan here, why wouldn't you want that personalization? I love that the news report states that if everyone spent just $64 a year (A YEAR!!) on items made in the U.S. we could create 200,000 jobs here.

  • Getting to work with my local upholsterer on the Ugly Chair Contest winner. I got to witness t

he process and ask questions about construction! Ben, a second generation upholsterer, is a true artist.

  • Unrelated to interiors, this is the 1st year my kids didn't want the mass produced Halloween costumes! I got to brainstorm with each of them and help them customize their costumes - so much fun to see their creativity!

Is your space an original or does it feel like a copy? Sometimes it just takes a little tweeking, let's meet to work on it. Contact me through my website http://www.the-silver-lining.com or by emailing me directly at info@the-silver-lining.com
