It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to…

I love this quote I came across:

  • "Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery – celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Codard said: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.” – Jim Jarmusch”

Being in Interior Design, I see so many beautiful fabrics, wallcoverings, designs, etc that it can be overwhelming, as a designer, to do your own space. “Is it just because it’s new that I like it? What if I get bored with it? Is it too trendy?” Then, several years ago, upon completing a model home in Northern California, I had found the space that spoke directly to my soul. The color scheme, some of the furniture pieces and architectural elements resonated so much with me, that in the years since, I have integrated many of the elements into my own home. The home office is the closest direct “thievery” – both have dark slate blue walls with white tongue and groove below. Instead of a large piece of driftwood hung on the wall, my personal office has a driftwood table lamp. Some of my pieces are vintage, some are modern, but the element that they all share is that they speak to me and I chose to listen.

In my last newsletter I touched on looking at images to get inspired. Also remember that life can inspire as well. While on vacation, I saw some beautiful Japanese style plates. The coloring and patterns reminded me of the speckled coats of the seals we saw basking on the offshore rocks in the Monterey region. The textures and the way the sun dappled across the water-worn cliffs reminded me of cork wallpaper. Find inspiration all around you. Find what makes your soul sing.

Let's get started on it the journey together. You can set up a complimentary, one hour consultation for us to talk about your space by contacting me through my website http://www.the-silver-lining.com

Remember to always look for the silver lining.
